Summer Safety Isn't Just About Sun Cream – It's About Protecting Your Family's Future

When we think about staying safe during the summer holidays, most of us remember the essentials – sun cream, hats, plenty of water, checking travel insurance and making sure everyone has packed what they need. We spend time preparing for holidays because we want our loved ones to be safe and to enjoy making memories together.
But there is one important area of family protection that is often overlooked;
Making sure your legal affairs are in order.
Protecting More Than Just Your Holiday
No one likes to think about the unexpected, especially when looking forward to a well-earned break. However, accidents and illness can happen at any time, whether you're travelling abroad, enjoying a staycation or simply spending more time outdoors.
Having the right legal documents in place provides reassurance that, whatever life brings, your loved ones will know your wishes and be protected.
Is Your Will Up to Date?
A Will is one of the most important ways you can protect the people you care about.
An up-to-date Will allows you to:
Decide who inherits your estate.
Appoint guardians for young children.
Choose trusted Executors to administer your estate.
Leave gifts to family, friends or charities.
Help reduce the potential for family disputes.
Many people assume everything will automatically pass to their loved ones. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Without a valid Will, the law decides who inherits your estate, and the outcome may not reflect your wishes.
Have Things Changed Since You Last Made Your Will?
Summer often brings families together, making it the perfect opportunity to think about whether your Will still reflects your current circumstances.
Ask yourself:
Have you moved home?
Have you married or divorced?
Have you welcomed children or grandchildren?
Have your financial circumstances changed?
Have any of your chosen Executors or beneficiaries passed away?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, it may be time to review your Will.
Don't Forget Lasting Powers of Attorney
Many people have a Will but have never considered what would happen if they were unable to make decisions during their lifetime due to illness or an accident.
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you lose mental capacity.
There are two types:
Property and Financial Affairs LPA, covering finances, property and bills.
Health and Welfare LPA, covering medical treatment and care decisions.
Without an LPA, your family may have to apply to the Court of Protection before they can help manage your affairs - a process that can be lengthy, expensive and stressful.
Peace of Mind Is the Best Holiday Companion
Planning ahead isn't about expecting the worst. It's about making life easier for the people you love if the unexpected happens.
Just as we wouldn't set off on holiday without checking we've packed the essentials, taking a little time to review your Will and consider a Lasting Power of Attorney can provide lasting peace of mind long after the summer is over.
