5 Signs It’s Time to Redo Your Will

Your Will isn’t something you set and forget. Life changes - and when it does, your Will needs to change with it.

If it’s been a while since you last reviewed yours, here are the five biggest signs it’s time for an update;

1. You’ve Had Major Life Changes

Marriage, divorce, having children, buying a home, or starting a business can all affect how your estate should be structured. If your Will doesn’t reflect your current life circumstances, it won’t protect the people you intend to.

Common examples:

  • New baby or step-children

  • Newly married or recently separated

  • Bought a property or investment

  • Started a business

2. Your Executor or Guardians Are No Longer Suitable

People move away, relationships change, or someone you appointed may no longer be the right fit.

If your executor, trustee or guardian is:

  • No longer close to you

  • In poor health

  • Too busy

  • Recently passed away

…then your Will needs updating to avoid complications later.

3. Your Financial Situation Has Changed

A Will made when you had fewer assets won’t provide enough protection now.

Consider a review if:

  • You’ve paid off a mortgage

  • Your property value has increased

  • You’ve received an inheritance

  • You’ve built up savings, investments, or pensions

  • You’ve started earning more (or less)

Your Will should always match your current financial picture.

4. You Now Need Extra Protection (Such as Trusts)

As families grow and situations become more complex, you may need additional planning such as:

  • Property Protection Trusts

  • Children’s Trusts

  • Business Trusts

  • Protective trusts for vulnerable or disabled beneficiaries

  • Second-marriage or blended family planning

If your existing Will is “basic”, it may not offer enough protection.

5. Your Will Is Over 5 Years Old

Even if nothing major has changed, the law can change - and so can tax rules, asset values, and your family dynamics.

A simple rule:

If your Will is 5+ years old, it’s time for a review.

This ensures everything is still valid, tax-efficient, and aligned with your wishes.
