☀️ Looking After Elderly Relatives During the Heatwave – It's Also a Good Time to Plan Ahead

When temperatures rise, many of us naturally check in on elderly parents, grandparents, neighbours and friends to make sure they're coping with the heat.
A quick phone call, dropping off some shopping, or making sure they have plenty of water can make a real difference.
While these visits are focused on keeping loved ones safe during the heatwave, they can also provide an opportunity to have an important conversation about planning for the future.
Keeping Loved Ones Safe in Hot Weather
Older people are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, so it's important to:
Encourage them to drink plenty of fluids.
Keep curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.
Ensure they have a cool place to rest.
Check that any medication is being taken correctly.
Visit or call them regularly to make sure they're well.
Sometimes, simply knowing someone is checking in can provide reassurance and comfort.
Have They Planned for the Future?
Many families avoid conversations about Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney because they feel uncomfortable. However, planning ahead isn't about expecting the worst - it's about giving everyone peace of mind.
Ask yourself:
Do they have an up-to-date Will?
Do you know where it's kept?
Have they appointed someone they trust to make decisions if they can no longer do so themselves?
These conversations are often much easier when everyone is well, rather than during a time of crisis.
Why Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney Go Hand in Hand
A Will ensures that a person's wishes are carried out after they pass away, including who inherits their estate and who will deal with their affairs.
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), however, protects them during their lifetime. It allows trusted family members or friends to make decisions about finances or health and welfare if they lose the ability to make those decisions themselves.
Many people are surprised to learn that even a husband, wife or adult child cannot automatically make these decisions without a registered LPA.
Having both documents in place provides complete peace of mind:
A Will protects your loved ones after you're gone.
An LPA protects you while you're still here.
Start the Conversation Today
If you're already visiting elderly relatives during the heatwave, it may be the perfect opportunity to gently ask whether their Will is up to date or whether they've considered making a Lasting Power of Attorney.
These aren't always easy conversations, but they're some of the most important you'll ever have - and your loved ones will thank you for helping them plan ahead.
